Evangelium secundum Matthaeum

Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.

The kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

Simili es regno de caelos ad homine ad paterfamiliase, qui exi primo mane conduce operarios in vinea suo.

Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.

And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Conventione autem facto cum operarios ex denario diurno, mitte illos in vinea suo.

Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos,

And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the marketplace idle.

Et egredior circa hora tertio, vide alio sta in foro otiosa,

et dixit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod justum fuerit dabo vobis.

And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just.

Et dic ad illos: et vos greek.expression in vinea meo, et quod iusto es da ad vos.

Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam: et fecit similiter.

And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner.

Illo autem i ab. Iterum autem exi circa sexto et nono hora: et fac similiter.

Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?

But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle?

Circa undecimo vero exi, et inveni alio sta, et dic ad illos: quid hoc sta toto die otiosa?

Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam.

They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go ye also into my vineyard.

Dic ad illo: quia nemo conduce nos. Dic ad illos: greek.expression et vos in vinea meo.

Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineæ procuratori suo: Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos.

And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first.

Cum sere autem facto es, domino de vinea dic ad procuratore suo: voca operarios, et redde ad illos mercede incipie ab novissimo usque ad primo.

Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios.

When therefore they were come that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

Cum qui ergo circa undecimo hora veni veni, accipe singulo denarios.

Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi: acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios.

But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: And they also received every man a penny.

Veni autem et primo, arbitra es quod plus es accipe: et autem ipso accipe singulo denarios.

Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias,

And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,

Et accipe murmura contra paterfamiliase,

dicentes: Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et æstus.

Saying: These last have worked but one hour. and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.

Dicente: illo novissimo uno hora fac, et pari illos ad nos fac, qui porta pondere de die, et aestu.

At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit: Amice, non facio tibi injuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum?

But he answering said to one of them: friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?

Sed illo respondente ad uno de illos, dic: amico, non fac ad te iniuria: nonne ex denario conveni mecum?

Tolle quod tuum est, et vade: volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi.

Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee.

Lola quod tuo es, et vade: vol autem et ad hoc ad novissimo dare sicut et ad te.

Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?

Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? Is thy eye evil, because I am good?

Aut non lice ad me quod vol, facere? An oculo tuo nequissimo es, quia me bono es?

Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

So shall the last be first and the first last. For many are called but few chosen.

Sic es novissimo primo, et primo novissimo. Multo nam es voca, pauco vero elige.

Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis:

And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart and said to them:

Et ascende Iesu Ierosolyma, assume duodecime discipulos secreto, et dic ad illos:

Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte,

Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes: and they shall condemn him to death.

Ecce ascende Ierosolyma, et Filio de homine trade ad principes de sacerdotes, et ad scribas, et condemna illo morte,

et tradent eum gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget.

And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified: and the third day he shall rise again.

Et trade illo ad gentes ad illude, et flagella, et crucifige, et tertio die resurge.

Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedæi cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo.

Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him.

Tunc matre ad illo de filios de Zebedaeo accede cum filios suo, adora et pete aliquo ab eo.

Qui dixit ei: Quid vis? Ait illi: Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo.

Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.

Qui dic ad illo: quid vol? Dic ad illo: dic ut hoc duo filio meo sede, uno ad dextera tuo, et uno ad sinistra in regno tuo.

Respondens autem Jesus, dixit: Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei: Possumus.

And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.

Respondente autem Iesu, dic: ne sci quid pete. Pote bibe calice, quem me bibe es? Dic ad illo: pote.

Ait illis: Calicem quidem meum bibetis: sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo.

He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.

Dic ad illos: calice quidem meo bibe: sede autem ad dextera meo vel sinistra non es meo dare ad vos, sed ad que para es ab Patre meo.

Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.

And the ten, hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

Et audi deceme, indignor es de duo fratre.

Jesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait: Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum: et qui majores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.

But Jesus called them to him and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and that they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.

Iesu autem voca illos ad se, et dic: sci quia principes de gentes dominor de illos: et qui magna es, potestate exerce in illos.

Non ita erit inter vos: sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister:

It shall not be so among you: but whosoever is the greater among you, let him be your minister.

Non ita es inter vos: sed omni vol inter vos magna fieri, es vestro ministro:

et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus.

And he that will be first among you shall be your servant.

Et qui vol inter vos primo es, es vestro servo.

Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis.

Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many.

Sicut Filio de homine non veni ministra, sed ministra, et dare anima suo redemptione pro multo.

Et egredientibus illis ab Jericho, secuta est eum turba multa,

And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

Et egredior ad illos ab Iericho, seque es illo turba multo,

et ecce duo cæci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Jesus transiret: et clamaverunt, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

And behold two blind men sitting by the way side heard that Jesus passed by. And they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

Et ecce duo caeco sede secus via audi quia Iesu transi: et clama, dicente: domino, misereor nostro, filio Davide.

Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

Turba autem increpa illos ut tace. Sed illo magis clama, dicente: domino, misereor nostro, filio Davide.

Et stetit Jesus, et vocavit eos, et ait: Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?

And Jesus stood and called them and said: What will ye that I do to you?

Et Iesu sta, et voca illos, et dic: quid vol ut fac ad vos?

Dicunt illi: Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri.

They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened.

Dic ad illo: domino, ut oculos nostro aperi.

Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.

And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw and followed him.

Misereor autem de illos Iesu, tange oculos de illos. Et confestim vide, et seque es illo.
