Evangelium secundum Matthaeum

Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti: tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos,

And when they drew nigh to Jerusalem and were come to Bethphage, unto mount Olivet, then Jesus sent two disciples,

Et cum appropinqua ad Ierosolymas, et veni Bethphage ad monte de Oliveto: tunc Iesu mitte duo discipulo,

dicens eis: Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea: solvite, et adducite mihi:

Saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you: and immediately you shall find an ass tied and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to me.

Dicente ad illos: greek.expression in castello, quod contra vos es, et statim inveni asina alliga, et pullo cum illa: solve, et adduce ad me:

et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet: et confestim dimittet eos.

And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye that the Lord hath need of them. And forthwith he will let them go.

Et si qui ad vos dic aliquo, dic quia Domino ad hoc habe opere: et confestim dimitte illos.

Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem:

Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

Hoc autem toto facto es, ut quod dicto es per propheta dic adimple:

Dicite filiæ Sion: Ecce rex tuus venit tibi mansuetus, sedens super asinam, et pullum filium subjugalis.

Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy king cometh to thee, meek and sitting upon an ass and a colt, the foal of her that is used to the yoke.

Dic de filia Sione: ecce rege tuo veni ad te mansueto, sedente super asina, et pullo filio subiugale.

Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus.

And the disciples going, did as Jesus commanded them.

Iente autem discipulos fac sicut Iesu ad illos praecipie.

Et adduxerunt asinam, et pullum: et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua, et eum desuper sedere fecerunt.

And they brought the ass and the colt and laid their garments upon them and made him sit thereon.

Et adduce asina, et pullo: et impone super illos vestimentos suo, et illo desuper sede fac.

Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via: alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus, et sternebant in via:

And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees and strewed them in the way.

Pluro autem turba sterne vestimentos suo in via: alio autem caede ramos de arbores, et sterne in via:

turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant, et quæ sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes: Hosanna filio David: benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini: hosanna in altissimis.

And the multitudes that went before and that followed cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Turbas autem, que praecede, et que seque, clama, dicente: hosanna ad filio Davide: benedicto, qui veni in nomine de Domino: hosanna in altissimo.

Et cum intrasset Jerosolymam, commota est universa civitas, dicens: Quis est hic?

And when he was come into Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying: Who is this?

Et cum intra Ierosolyma, commove es universa civitate, dicente: qui es hoc?

Populi autem dicebant: Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ.

And the people said: This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.

Populos autem dic: hoc es Iesu propheta ab Nazareth de Galilaea.

Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei, et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit:

And Jesus went into the temple of God and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money changers and the chairs of them that sold doves.

Et Iesu intra in templo de Deo, et eiice omni vende et eme in templo, et mensas de numularios, et cathedras vende columbas everte:

et dicit eis: Scriptum est: Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur: vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum.

And he saith to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.

Et dic ad illos: scripto es: domo meo domo de oratione voca: vos autem fac illa spelunca de latros.

Et accesserunt ad eum cæci, et claudi in templo: et sanavit eos.

And there came to him the blind and the lame in the temple: and he healed them.

Et accede ad illo caeco, et claudo in templo: et sana illos.

Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes: Hosanna filio David: indignati sunt,

And the chief priests and scribes, seeing the wonderful things that he did and the children crying in the temple and saying: Hosanna to the son of David, were moved with indignation,

Vide autem principes de sacerdotes et scribas mirabili que fac, et pueros clama in templo, et dicente: hosanna ad filio Davide: indignor es,

et dixerunt ei: Audis quid isti dicunt? Jesus autem dixit eis: Utique. Numquam legistis: Quia ex ore infantium et lactentium perfecisti laudem?

And said to him: Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yea, have you never read: Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

Et dic ad illo: audi isto dic quid? Iesu autem dic ad illos: utique. Nunquam lege: quia ex ore de infantes et lacta perfice laude?

Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam: ibique mansit.

And leaving them, he went out of the city into Bethania and remained here.

Et relinque ad illos, i ab foras extra civitate in Bethania: et ibi mane.

Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit.

And in the morning, returning into the city, he was hungry.

Mane autem reverte in civitate, esuri.

Et videns fici arborem unam secus viam, venit ad eam: et nihil invenit in ea nisi folia tantum, et ait illi: Numquam ex te fructus nascatur in sempiternum. Et arefacta est continuo ficulnea.

And seeing a certain fig tree by the way side, he came to it and found nothing on it but leaves only. And he saith to it: May no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And immediately the fig tree withered away.

Et vidente de ficu arbore uno secus via, veni ad illa: et nihil inveni in illa nisi folios tanto, et dic ad illo: nunquam ex te fructu nasce in sempiterno. Et arefacie es continuo ficulnea.

Et videntes discipuli, mirati sunt, dicentes: Quomodo continuo aruit?

And the disciples seeing it wondered, saying: How is it presently withered away?

Et vide discipulos, miror es, dicente: quomodo continuo are?

Respondens autem Jesus, ait eis: Amen dico vobis, si habueritis fidem, et non hæsitaveritis, non solum de ficulnea facietis, sed et si monti huic dixeritis: Tolle, et jacta te in mare, fiet.

And Jesus answering, said to them: Amen, I say to you, if you shall have faith and stagger not, not only this of the fig tree shall you do, but also if you shall say to this mountain, Take up and cast thyself into the sea, it shall be done.

Respondente autem Iesu, dic ad illos: amen dic ad vos, si habe fide, et non haesita, non solo de ficulnea fac, sed et si ad monte ad hoc dic: lola, et iacta te in mari, i fi.

Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis.

And all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer believing, you shall receive.

Et omni omni pete in oratione crede, accipe.

Et cum venisset in templum, accesserunt ad eum docentem principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, dicentes: In qua potestate hæc facis? et quis tibi dedit hanc potestatem?

And when he was come into the temple, there came to him, as he was teaching, the chief priests and ancients of the people, saying: By what authority dost thou these things? And who hath given thee this authority?

Et cum veni in templo, accede ad illo doce principes de sacerdotes, et sene de populo, dicente: in quo potestate hoc fac? Et qui ad te da hoc potestate?

Respondens Jesus dixit eis: Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem: quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio.

Jesus answering, said to them: I also will ask you one word, which if you shall tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

Respondente Iesu dic ad illos: et me interroga vos uno sermone: quem si dic ad me, et me ad vos dic in quo potestate hoc fac.

Baptismus Joannis unde erat? e cælo, an ex hominibus? At illi cogitabant inter se, dicentes:

The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men? But they thought within themselves, saying:

Baptismo de Ioanne unde es? Ex caelo, an ex homines? Sed illo cogita inter se, dicente:

Si dixerimus, e cælo, dicet nobis: Quare ergo non credidistis illi? Si autem dixerimus, ex hominibus, timemus turbam: omnes enim habebant Joannem sicut prophetam.

If we shall say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him? But if we shall say, from men, we are afraid of the multitude: for all held John as a prophet.

Si dic, ex caelo, dic ad nos: quare ergo non crede ad illo? Si autem dic, ex homines, time turba: omni nam habe Ioanne sicut propheta.

Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt: Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse: Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio.

And answering Jesus, they said: We know not. He also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Et responde ad Iesu, dic: ne sci. Dic ad illos et ipso: nec me dic ad vos in quo potestate hoc fac.

Quid autem vobis videtur? Homo quidam habebat duos filios, et accedens ad primum, dixit: Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea mea.

But what think you? A certain man had two sons: and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Quid autem ad vos vide se? Homine uno habe duo filio, et accede ad primo, filio: dic, vade hodie, operor in vinea meo.

Ille autem respondens, ait: Nolo. Postea autem, pœnitentia motus, abiit.

And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went.

Illo autem respondente, dic: ne vol. Postea autem, poenitentia move, i ab.

Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens, ait: Eo, domine, et non ivit:

And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering said: I go, Sir. And he went not.

Accede autem ad altero, dic similiter. Sed illo respondente, dic: eo, domino, et non i:

quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris? Dicunt ei: Primus. Dicit illis Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei.

Which of the two did the father's will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you.

Qui ex duo fac voluntate de patre? Dic ad illo: primo. Iesu ad illos dic: amen dic ad vos, quia publicanos et meretrices praecede vos in regno de Deo.

Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiæ, et non credidistis ei: publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei: vos autem videntes nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei.

For John came to you in the way of justice: and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.

Ioanne nam ad vos veni in via de iustitia, et non crede ad illo: publicanos autem et meretrices crede ad illo: vos autem vide nec habe poenitentia postea, ut crede ad illo.

Aliam parabolam audite: Homo erat paterfamilias, qui plantavit vineam, et sepem circumdedit ei, et fodit in ea torcular, et ædificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.

Hear ye another parable. There was a man, an householder, who planted a vineyard and made a hedge round about it and dug in it a press and built a tower and let it out to husbandmen and went into a strange country.

Alio parabola audi: homine es paterfamiliase, qui planta vinea, et sepe circumda ad illo, et fodie in illa torculare, et aedifica turre, et loca illa ad agricolas, et peregre proficiscor es.

Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus ejus.

And when the time of the fruits drew nigh, he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof.

Cum autem tempore de fructus appropinqua, mitte servos suo ad agricolas, ut accipe fructus de illo.

Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt.

And the husbandmen laying hands on his servants, beat one and killed another and stoned another.

Et agricolas, apprehende servos de illo, cade alio, alio occide, alio vero lapida.

Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter.

Again he sent other servants, more than the former; and they did to them in like manner.

Iterum mitte alio servos plure priore, et fac ad illos similiter.

Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum, dicens: Verebuntur filium meum.

And last of all he sent to them his son, saying: They will reverence my son.

Novites autem mitte ad illos filio suo, dicente: vereor filio meo.

Agricolæ autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se: Hic est hæres, venite, occidamus eum, et habebimus hæreditatem ejus.

But the husbandmen seeing the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and we shall have his inheritance.

Agricolas autem vide filio dic intra se: hoc es haro, veni, occide illo, et habe haereditate de illo.

Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt.

And taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard and killed him.

Et apprehende illo eicie extra vinea, et occide.

Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ, quid faciet agricolis illis?

When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen?

Cum ergo domino de vinea veni, quid i fac ad agricolas ad illos?

Aiunt illi: Malos male perdet: et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis.

They say to him: He will bring those evil men to an evil end and let out his vineyard to other husbandmen that shall render him the fruit in due season.

Ad illo dic: malo male perde: et vinea suo loca alio ad agricolas, qui redde ad illo fructu tempores suo.

Dicit illis Jesus: Numquam legistis in Scripturis: Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli: a Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris?

Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes.

Iesu ad illos dic: nunquam lege in Scripturas: lapide quem reproba aedifica, hoc facto es in capite de angulo: ab Domino facto es isto, et es mirabili in oculos nostro?

Ideo dico vobis, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei, et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus.

Therefore I say to you that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof.

Ideo dic ad vos, quia regno ab vos de Deo aufer, et da ad gente fac fructus de illo.

Et qui ceciderit super lapidem istum, confringetur: super quem vero ceciderit, conteret eum.

And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

Et qui cade super lapide isto, confringe: super quem vero cade, contere illo.

Et cum audissent principes sacerdotum et pharisæi parabolas ejus, cognoverunt quod de ipsis diceret.

And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knew that he spoke of them.

Et cum principes de sacerdotes et pharisaeos audi parabolas de illo, cognosce quod de ipso dic.

Et quærentes eum tenere, timuerunt turbas: quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.

And seeking to lay hands on him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him as a prophet.

Et quaere illo tene, time turbas: quia sicut propheta illo habe.
