Liber II Paralipomenon

Profectus est autem Roboam in Sichem: illuc enim cunctus Israël convenerat ut constituerent eum regem.

And Roboam went to Sichem: for thither all Israel were assembled, to make him king.

Proficiscor es autem Roboame in Sicheme: illuc nam cuncta Israële conveni ut constitue illo rege.

Quod cum audisset Jeroboam filius Nabat, qui erat in Ægypto (fugerat quippe illuc ante Salomonem), statim reversus est.

And when Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (for he was fled thither from Solomon,) heard it, forthwith he returned.

Quod cum audi Ieroboame filio Nabate, qui es in Aegypto (fuge quippe illuc ante Salomone), statim reverte es.

Vocaveruntque eum, et venit cum universo Israël: et locuti sunt ad Roboam, dicentes:

And they sent for him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:

Et voca illo, et veni cum universa Israële: et loque es ad Roboame, dicente:

Pater tuus durissimo jugo nos pressit: tu leviora impera patre tuo, qui nobis imposuit gravem servitutem, et paululum de onere subleva, ut serviamus tibi.

Thy father oppressed with a most grievous yoke, do thou govern us with a lighter hand than thy father, who laid upon us a heavy servitude, and ease some thing of the burden, that we may serve thee.

Patre tuo duro iugo preme nos: te impera levi patre tuo, qui ad nos impone gravi servitute, et paul(l)ulum de onere subleva, ut servi ad te.

Qui ait: Post tres dies revertimini ad me. Cumque abiisset populus,

And he said to them: Come to me again after three days. And when the people were gone,

Qui dic: post tre die reverte ad me. Cumque populo i ab,

iniit consilium cum senibus qui steterant coram patre ejus Salomone dum adhuc viveret, dicens: Quid datis consilii ut respondeam populo?

He took counsel with the ancients, who had stood before his father Solomon, while he yet lived, saying: What counsel give you to me, that I may answer the people?

Intra consilio cum senes qui sta coram patre de illo Salomone dum adhuc vive, dicente: quid da de consilio ut responde ad populo?

Qui dixerunt ei: Si placueris populo huic, et leniveris eos verbis clementibus, servient tibi omni tempore.

And they said to him: If thou please this people, and soothe them with kind words, they will be thy servants for ever.

Qui dic ad illo: si place ad populo ad hoc, et leni illos verbos clema, servi ad te omni tempore.

At ille reliquit consilium senum, et cum juvenibus tractare cœpit, qui cum eo nutriti fuerant, et erant in comitatu illius.

But he forsook the counsel of the ancients, and began to treat with the young men, that had been brought up with him, and were in his train.

Sed illo relinque consilio de senes, et cum iuvene tracta incipe, qui cum eo nutri es, et es in comitatu de illo.

Dixitque ad eos: Quid vobis videtur? vel respondere quid debeo populo huic, qui dixit mihi: Subleva jugum quod imposuit nobis pater tuus?

And he said to them: What seemeth good to you? or what shall I answer this people, who have said to me: Ease the yoke which thy father laid upon us?

Et dic ad illos: quid ad vos vide se? Vel responde quid debe ad populo ad hoc, qui dic ad me: subleva iugo patre tuo ad nos impone quod?

At illi responderunt ut juvenes, et nutriti cum eo in deliciis, atque dixerunt: Sic loqueris populo qui dixit tibi: Pater tuus aggravavit jugum nostrum, tu subleva: et sic respondebis ei: Minimus digitus meus grossior est lumbis patris mei.

But they answered as young men, and brought up with him in pleasures, and said: Thus shalt thou speak to the people, that said to thee: Thy father made our yoke heavy, do thou ease it: thus shalt thou answer them: My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.

Sed illo responde ut iuvene, et nutri cum eo in delicias, et dic: sic loque ad populo qui dic ad te: patre tuo aggrava iugo nostro, te subleva: et sic minimo ad illo: digito meo grosse es lumbos de patre meo responde.

Pater meus imposuit vobis grave jugum, et ego majus pondus apponam; pater meus cecidit vos flagellis, ego vero cædam vos scorpionibus.

My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, and I will add more weight to it: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.

Patre meo impone ad vos gravi iugo, et me appone magna pondere; patre meo cade vos flagellos, me vero caede vos ad scorpiones.

Venit ergo Jeroboam et universus populus ad Roboam die tertio, sicut præceperat eis.

So Jeroboam, and all the people came to Roboam the third day, as he commanded them.

Ieroboame ergo et universa populo veni ad Roboame die tertio, sicut praecipie ad illos.

Responditque rex dura, derelicto consilio seniorum:

And the king answered roughly, leaving the counsel of the ancients.

Et rege duro responde, derelinque consilio sene:

locutusque est juxta juvenum voluntatem: Pater meus grave vobis imposuit jugum, quod ego gravius faciam; pater meus cecidit vos flagellis, ego vero cædam vos scorpionibus.

And he spoke according to the advice of the young men: My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, which I will make heavier: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.

Et locuto es juxta iuvenos voluntate: patre meo gravi ad vos impone iugo, me fac graviter quod; patre meo cade vos flagellos, me vero caede vos ad scorpiones.

Et non acquievit populi precibus: erat enim voluntatis Dei ut compleretur sermo ejus quem locutus fuerat per manum Ahiæ Silonitis ad Jeroboam filium Nabat.

And he condescended not to the people's requests: for it was the will of God, that his word might be fulfilled which he had spoken by the hand of Ahias the Silonite to Jeroboam the son of Nabat.

Et non acquiesce de populo preces: es nam de voluntate de Deo ut sermone de illo quem locuto es per manu de Ahiase de Silone ad Ieroboame filio Nabate comple.

Populus autem universus rege duriora dicente, sic locutus est ad eum: Non est nobis pars in David, neque hæreditas in filio Isai. Revertere in tabernacula tua, Israël; tu autem pasce domum tuam David. Et abiit Israël in tabernacula sua.

And all the people upon the king's speaking roughly, said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel, and do thou, O David feed thy own house. And Israel went away to their dwellings.

Populo autem universa rege duro dic, sic locuto es ad illo: non es ad nos parte in Davide, neque haereditate in filio Isa. Reverte in tabernaculos tuo, Israële; te autem pasce domo tuo Davide. Et i ab Israële in tabernaculos suo.

Super filios autem Israël qui habitabant in civitatibus Juda, regnavit Roboam.

But Roboam reigned over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Juda.

Super filios autem Israële qui habita in civitates Iuda, regna Roboame.

Misitque rex Roboam Aduram, qui præerat tributis, et lapidaverunt eum filii Israël, et mortuus est: porro rex Roboam currum festinavit ascendere, et fugit in Jerusalem.

And king Roboam sent Aduram, who was over the tributes, and the children of Israel stoned him, and he died: and king Roboam made haste to get up into his chariot, and fled into Jerusalem.

Et mitte rege Roboame Adura, qui praesume tributos, et filios Israële lapida illo, et morto es: porro rege Roboame festina curro ascende, et fuge in Ierusalem.

Recessitque Israël a domo David, usque ad diem hanc.

And Israel revolted from the house of David unto this day.

Et Israële recede ab domo Davide, usque ad die hoc.
