Post mortem Josue, consuluerunt filii Israël Dominum, dicentes: Quis ascendet ante nos contra Chananæum, et erit dux belli?

After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?

Post morte Ioso, filios Israële consule Domino, dicente: qui ascende ante nos contra Chananaeo, et es duce de bello?

Dixitque Dominus: Judas ascendet: ecce tradidi terram in manus ejus.

And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.

Et dic Domino: iudase ascende: ecce trade terra in manus de illo.

Et ait Judas Simeoni fratri suo: Ascende mecum in sortem meam, et pugna contra Chananæum, ut et ego pergam tecum in sortem tuam. Et abiit cum eo Simeon.

And Juda said to Simeon, his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.

Et Iudase dic ad Simeone ad fratre suo: ascende mecum in sorte meo, et pugna contra Chananaeo, ut et me perge tecum in sorte tuo. Et Symeone cum eo i ab.

Ascenditque Judas, et tradidit Dominus Chananæum ac Pherezæum in manus eorum: et percusserunt in Bezec decem millia virorum.

And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.

Et Iudase ascende, et Domino Chananaeo et Pherezaeo trade in manus de illos: et percute in Bezece deceme mile de viros.

Inveneruntque Adonibezec in Bezec, et pugnaverunt contra eum, ac percusserunt Chananæum et Pherezæum.

And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.

Et inveni Adonibeze in Bezece, et pugna contra illo, et percute Chananaeo et Pherezaeo.

Fugit autem Adonibezec: quem persecuti comprehenderunt, cæsis summitatibus manuum ejus ac pedum.

And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.

Fuge autem Adonibeze: quem perseque comprehende, caede summitates de manus de illo et de pedes.

Dixitque Adonibezec: Septuaginta reges amputatis manuum ac pedum summitatibus colligebant sub mensa mea ciborum reliquias: sicut feci, ita reddidit mihi Deus. Adduxeruntque eum in Jerusalem, et ibi mortuus est.

And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings, having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

Et dic Adonibeze: de septuaginta reges amputa de manus et de pedes summitates collige sub mensa meo de cibos reliquias: sicut fac, ita Deo ad me redde. Et adduce illo in Ierusalem, et ibi morto es.

Oppugnantes ergo filii Juda Jerusalem, ceperunt eam, et percusserunt in ore gladii, tradentes cunctam incendio civitatem.

And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.

Oppugna ergo filios Iuda Ierusalem, cape illa, et percute in ore de gladio, trade cuncta incendio civitate.

Et postea descendentes pugnaverunt contra Chananæum, qui habitabat in montanis, et ad meridiem, et in campestribus.

And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.

Et postea descende pugna contra Chananaeo, qui habita in montano, et ad meridie, et in campestri.

Pergensque Judas contra Chananæum, qui habitabat in Hebron (cujus nomen fuit antiquitus Cariath Arbe), percussit Sesai, et Ahiman, et Tholmai:

And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron, (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:

Et pergente Iudase contra Chananaeo, qui habita in Hebrone (de que nomine es antiquitus Cariath Arbe), percute Sesao, et Ahimane, et Tholma:

atque inde profectus abiit ad habitatores Dabir, cujus nomen vetus erat Cariath Sepher, id est, civitas litterarum.

And departing from thence, he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.

Et inde proficiscor i ab ad habitatores Dabire, de que nomine veteri es Cariath Sephro, id es, civitate de litteras.

Dixitque Caleb: Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher, et vastaverit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem.

And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.

Et dic Calebe: qui percute Cariath Sephro, et vasta illa, da ad illo Axame filia meo uxore.

Cumque cepisset eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb minor, dedit ei Axam filiam suam conjugem.

And Othoniel, the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.

Cumque Othoniele filio Cenez fratre Calebe minimo cape illa, da ad illo Axame filia suo coniunce.

Quam pergentem in itinere monuit vir suus ut peteret a patre suo agrum. Quæ cum suspirasset sedens in asino, dixit ei Caleb: Quid habes?

And as she was going on her way, her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?

Quam perge in itinere viro suo mone ut pete ab patre suo agro. Que cum suspira sedente in asino, Calebe ad illo dic: quid habe?

At illa respondit: Da mihi benedictionem, quia terram arentem dedisti mihi: da et irriguam aquis. Dedit ergo ei Caleb irriguum superius, et irriguum inferius.

But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.

Sed illa responde: da ad me benedictione, quia terra are da ad me: da et irrigua aquas. Da ergo ad illo Calebe irriguo super, et irriguo inferiori.

Filii autem Cinæi cognati Moysi ascenderunt de civitate palmarum cum filiis Juda, in desertum sortis ejus, quod est ad meridiem Arad, et habitaverunt cum eo.

And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda, into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.

Filios autem Cinaeis cognato de Moysi ascende de civitate de palmas cum filios Iuda, in deserto de sorto de illo, quod es ad meridie Arade, et habita cum eo.

Abiit autem Judas cum Simeone fratre suo, et percusserunt simul Chananæum qui habitabat in Sephaath, et interfecerunt eum. Vocatumque est nomen urbis, Horma, id est, anathema.

And Juda went with Simeon, his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.

Iudase autem i ab cum Simeone fratre suo, et percute simul Chananaeo qui habita in Sephaath, et interfice illo. Et voca es nomine de urbe, Horma, id es, anathemate.

Cepitque Judas Gazam cum finibus suis, et Ascalonem, atque Accaron cum terminis suis.

And Juda took Gaza, with its confines, and Ascalon, and Accaron, with their confines.

Et Iudase cape Gazase cum fines suo, et Ascalone, et Accarone cum terminos suo.

Fuitque Dominus cum Juda, et montana possedit: nec potuit delere habitatores vallis, quia falcatis curribus abundabant.

And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.

Et es Domino cum Iuda, et montano posside: nec pote dele habitatores de valle, quia falca curres abunda.

Dederuntque Caleb Hebron, sicut dixerat Moyses, qui delevit ex ea tres filios Enac.

And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.

Et da Calebe Hebrone, sicut dic Moyse, qui dele ex illa tre filio Enace.

Jebusæum autem habitatorem Jerusalem non deleverunt filii Benjamin: habitavitque Jebusæus cum filiis Benjamin in Jerusalem, usque in præsentem diem.

But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.

Iebusaeo autem habitatore Ierusalem non dele filios Beniamine: et habita Iebusaeo cum filios Beniamine in Ierusalem, usque in praesenti die.

Domus quoque Joseph ascendit in Bethel, fuitque Dominus cum eis.

The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

Domo etiam Ioseph ascende in Bethele, et es Domino cum illos.

Nam cum obsiderent urbem, quæ prius Luza vocabatur,

For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,

Nam cum obside urbe, que ante Luza voca,

viderunt hominem egredientem de civitate, dixeruntque ad eum: Ostende nobis introitum civitatis, et faciemus tecum misericordiam.

They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

Vide homine egredior de civitate, et dic ad illo: ostende ad nos introitu de civitate, et fac tecum misericordia.

Qui cum ostendisset eis, percusserunt urbem in ore gladii: hominem autem illum, et omnem cognationem ejus, dimiserunt.

And when he had shewed them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man, and all his kindred, they let go:

Qui cum ostende ad illos, percute urbe in ore de gladio: homine autem illo, et omni cognatione de illo, dimitte.

Qui dimissus, abiit in terram Hetthim, et ædificavit ibi civitatem, vocavitque eam Luzam: quæ ita appellatur usque in præsentem diem.

Who being sent away, went into the land of Hetthim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.

Qui dimitte, i ab in terra Hetthime, et aedifica ibi civitate, et voca illa Luza: que ita appella usque in praesenti die.

Manasses quoque non delevit Bethsan, et Thanac cum viculis suis, et habitatores Dor, et Jeblaam, et Mageddo cum viculis suis, cœpitque Chananæus habitare cum eis.

Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac, with their villages; nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo, with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.

Manasse etiam non dele Bethsane, et Thanace cum viculos suo, et habitatores Dore, et Ieblaame, et Mageddo cum viculos suo, et Chananaeo incipe habita cum illos.

Postquam autem confortatus est Israël, fecit eos tributarios, et delere noluit.

But after Israel was grown strong, he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.

Postquam autem conforta es Israële, fac illos tributario, et dele ne vol.

Ephraim etiam non interfecit Chananæum, qui habitabat in Gazer, sed habitavit cum eo.

Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, bnt dwelt with him.

Ephraeme etiam non interfice Chananaeo, qui habita in Gazro, sed habita cum eo.

Zabulon non delevit habitatores Cetron, et Naalol: sed habitavit Chananæus in medio ejus, factusque est ei tributarius.

Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributary.

Zabulone non dele habitatores Cetrone, et Naalole: sed Chananaeo habita in medio de illo, et facto es ad illo tributario.

Aser quoque non delevit habitatores Accho, et Sidonis, Ahalab, et Achazib, et Helba, et Aphec, et Rohob:

Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:

Asro etiam non dele habitatores Accho, et de Sidone, Ahalabe, et Achazibe, et Helba, et Aphece, et Rohobe:

habitavitque in medio Chananæi habitatoris illius terræ, nec interfecit eum.

And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites, the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.

Et habita in medio de Chananaeo de habitatore de illo de terra, nec interfice illo.

Nephthali quoque non delevit habitatores Bethsames, et Bethanath: et habitavit inter Chananæum habitatorem terræ, fueruntque ei Bethsamitæ et Bethanitæ tributarii.

Nephthali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites, the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.

Nephthali etiam non dele habitatores Bethsamite, et Bethanath: et habita inter Chananaeo habitatore de terra, et es ad illo Bethsamita et Bethanito tributario.

Arctavitque Amorrhæus filios Dan in monte, nec dedit eis locum ut ad planiora descenderent:

And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not a place to go down to the plain:

Et arctavites Amorrhaeo filios Dano in monte, nec da ad illos loco ut ad plano descende:

habitavitque in monte Hares, quod interpretatur testaceo, in Ajalon et Salebim. Et aggravata est manus domus Joseph, factusque est ei tributarius.

And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.

Et habita in monte Hare, quod interpretor testaceo, in Aialone et Salebia. Et aggrava es manu domo Ioseph, et facto es ad illo tributario.

Fuit autem terminus Amorrhæi ab ascensu Scorpionis, petra, et superiora loca.

And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.

Termino autem de Amorrhaeo es ab ascensu de Scorpione, petra, et superiori locos.
