Liber Ecclesiasticus

Noli facere mala, et non te apprehendent:

Do no evils, and no evils shall lay hold of thee.

Ne vol facere malo, et non te apprehende:

discede ab iniquo, et deficient mala abs te.

Depart from the unjust, and evils shall depart from thee.

Discede ab iniquo, et malo defice ab te.

Fili, non semines mala in sulcis injustitiæ, et non metes ea in septuplum.

My son, sow not evils in the furrows of injustice, and thou shalt not reap them sevenfold.

Filio, non sema malo in sulcos de iniustitia, et non mete illa in septuplo.

Noli quærere a Domino ducatum, neque a rege cathedram honoris.

Seek not of the Lord a preeminence, nor of the king the seat of honour.

Ne vol quaere ab Domino ducatu, neque ab rege cathedra de honore.

Non te justifices ante Deum, quoniam agnitor cordis ipse est: et penes regem noli velle videri sapiens.

Justify not thyself before God, for he knoweth the heart: and desire not to appear wise before the king.

Non te iustifica ante Deo, quia agnitore de corde ipso es: et penes rege ne vol velle vide sape.

Noli quærere fieri judex, nisi valeas virtute irrumpere iniquitates: ne forte extimescas faciem potentis, et ponas scandalum in æquitate tua.

Seek not to be made a judge, unless thou have strength enough to extirpate iniquities: lest thou fear the person of the powerful, and lay a stumblingblock for thy integrity.

Ne vol quaere fieri iudice, nisi vale virtute irrumpe iniquitates: ne forte extimesce facie potente, et pone scandalo in aequitate tuo.

Non pecces in multitudinem civitatis, nec te immittas in populum:

Offend not against the multitude of a city, neither cast thyself in upon the people,

Non pecca in multitudine de civitate, nec te immitte in populo:

neque alliges duplicia peccata, nec enim in uno eris immunis.

Nor bind sin to sin: for even in one thou shalt not be unpunished.

Neque alliga duplici peccatos, nec nam in uno es immune.

Noli esse pusillanimis in animo tuo:

Be not fainthearted in thy mind:

Ne vol es pusillanimo in animo tuo:

exorare et facere eleemosynam ne despicias.

Neglect not to pray, and to give alms.

Exora et facere eleemosyna ne despice.

Ne dicas: In multitudine munerum meorum respiciet Deus, et offerente me Deo altissimo, munera mea suscipiet.

Say not: God will have respect to the multitude of my gifts, and when I offer to the most high God, he will accept my offerings.

Ne dic: in multitudine de munes meo Deo respice, et offer me Deo altissimo, muneres meo suscipe.

Non irrideas hominem in amaritudine animæ: est enim qui humiliat et exaltat circumspector Deus.

Laugh no man to scorn in the bitterness of his soul: for there is one that humbleth and exalteth, God who seeth all.

Non irride homine in amaritudine de anima: es nam qui humilia et Deo circumspecta exalta.

Noli amare mendacium adversus fratrem tuum, neque in amicum similiter facias.

Devise not a lie against thy brother: neither do the like against thy friend.

Ne vol ama mendacio contra fratre tuo, neque in amico similiter fac.

Noli velle mentiri omne mendacium: assiduitas enim illius non est bona.

Be not willing to make any manner of lie: for the custom thereof is not good.

Ne vol velle mentior omni mendacio: assiduitate nam de illo non es bono.

Noli verbosus esse in multitudine presbyterorum, et non iteres verbum in oratione tua.

Be not full of words in a multitude of ancients, and repeat not the word in thy prayer.

Ne vol verboso es in multitudine de presbyteros, et non ita verbo in oratione tuo.

Non oderis laboriosa opera, et rusticationem creatam ab Altissimo.

Hate not laborious works, nor husbandry ordained by the most High.

Non ode laborioso operes, et rusticatione crea ab Altissimo.

Non te reputes in multitudine indisciplinatorum.

Number not thyself among the multitude of the disorderly.

Non te reputa in multitudine indiscina.

Memento iræ, quoniam non tardabit.

Remember wrath, for it will not tarry long.

Mene de ira, quia non tarda.

Humilia valde spiritum tuum, quoniam vindicta carnis impii ignis et vermis.

Humble thy spirit very much: for the vengeance on the flesh of the ungodly is fire and worms.

Humili valde spiritu tuo, quia vindicta de carne impio de igni et verme.

Noli prævaricari in amicum pecuniam differentem, neque fratrem carissimum auro spreveris.

Do not transgress against thy friend deferring money, nor despise thy dear brother for the sake of gold.

Ne vol praevaricor in amico pecunia differe, neque fratre carissimo auro spriva.

Noli discedere a muliere sensata et bona, quam sortitus es in timore Domini: gratia enim verecundiæ illius super aurum.

Depart not from a wise and good wife, whom thou hast gotten in the fear of the Lord: for the grace of her modesty is above gold.

Ne vol discede ab muliere sensata et bono, quam sortior es in timore de Domino: gratia nam de verecundia de illo super auro.

Non lædas servum in veritate operantem, neque mercenarium dantem animam suam.

Hurt not the servant that worketh faithfully, nor the hired man that giveth thee his life.

Non laede servo in veritate operor, neque mercenario da anima suo.

Servus sensatus sit tibi dilectus quasi anima tua: non defraudes illum libertate, neque inopem derelinquas illum.

Let a wise servant be dear to thee as thy own soul, defraud him not of liberty, nor leave him needy.

Servo sensata es ad te dilecto quasi anima tuo: non defraudi illo libertate, neque inope derelinque illo.

Pecora tibi sunt, attende illis: et si sunt utilia, perseverent apud te.

Hast thou cattle? have an eye to them: and if they be for thy profit, keep them with thee.

Pecores ad te es, attende ad illos: et si es utile, perseva apud te.

Filii tibi sunt? erudi illos, et curva illos a pueritia illorum.

Hast thou children? instruct them, and bow down their neck from their childhood.

Filios ad te es? Eruda illos, et curva illos ab pueritia de illos.

Filiæ tibi sunt? serva corpus illarum, et non ostendas hilarem faciem tuam ad illas.

Hast thou daughters? have a care of their body, and shew not thy countenance gay towards them.

Filias ad te es? Serva corpore illo, et non ostende hilare facie tuo ad illas.

Trade filiam, et grande opus feceris: et homini sensato da illam.

Marry thy daughter well, and thou shalt do a great work, and give her to a wise man.

Trade filia, et grandi opere fac: et ad homine sensata da illa.

Mulier si est tibi secundum animam tuam, non projicias illam: et odibili non credas te. In toto corde tuo

If thou hast a wife according to thy soul, cast her not off: and to her that is hateful, trust not thyself. With thy whole heart,

Muliere si es ad te secundo anima tuo, non proiici illa: et de odibile non crede te. In toto corde tuo

honora patrem tuum, et gemitus matris tuæ ne obliviscaris:

Honour thy father, and forget not the groanings of thy mother:

Honora patre tuo, et gemitus de matre tuo ne obliviscor:

memento quoniam nisi per illos natus non fuisses: et retribue illis, quomodo et illi tibi.

Remember that thou hadst not been born but through them: and make a return to them as they have done for thee.

Mene quia nisi per illos nato non es: et retribue ad illos, quomodo et ad illo ad te.

In tota anima tua time Dominum, et sacerdotes illius sanctifica.

With all thy soul fear the Lord, and reverence his priests.

In toto anima tuo time Domino, et sacerdotes de illo sanctifica.

In omni virtute tua dilige eum qui te fecit, et ministros ejus ne derelinquas.

With all thy strength love him that made thee: and forsake not his ministers.

In omni virtute tuo dilige illo qui fac te, et ministros de illo ne derelinque.

Honora Deum ex tota anima tua, et honorifica sacerdotes, et propurga te cum brachiis.

Honour God with all thy soul and give honour to the priests, and purify thyself with thy arms.

Honora Deo ex toto anima tuo, et honorificus sacerdotes, et propurga te cum brachios.

Da illis partem, sicut mandatum est tibi, primitiarum et purgationis, et de negligentia tua purga te cum paucis.

Give them their portion, as it is commanded thee, of the firstfruits and of purifications: and for thy negligences purify thyself with a few.

Da ad illos parte, sicut manda es ad te, de primitias et de purgatione, et de negligentia tuo purga te cum paucissimo.

Datum brachiorum tuorum, et sacrificium sanctificationis offeres Domino, et initia sanctorum.

Offer to the Lord the gift of thy shoulders, and the sacrifice of sanctification, and the firstfruits of the holy things:

Dato de brachios tuo, et sacrificio de sanctificatione offer ad Domino, et initios sancto.

Et pauperi porrige manum tuam, ut perficiatur propitiatio et benedictio tua.

And stretch out thy hand to the poor, that thy expiation and thy blessing may be perfected.

Et ad paupere porrige manu tuo, ut perfice propitiatio et benedictione tuo.

Gratia dati in conspectu omnis viventis, et mortuo non prohibeas gratiam.

A gift hath grace in the sight of all the living, and restrain not grace from the dead.

Gratia da in conspectu omni vive, et more non prohibe gratia.

Non desis plorantibus in consolatione, et cum lugentibus ambula.

Be not wanting in comforting them that weep, and walk with them that mourn.

Non desume plora in consolatione, et cum luge ambula.

Non te pigeat visitare infirmum: ex his enim in dilectione firmaberis.

Be not slow to visit the sick: for by these things thou shalt be confirmed in love.

Non te pige visita infirmiori: ex hoc nam in dilectione firma.

In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua, et in æternum non peccabis.

In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin.

In omni operes tuo memora novissimo tuo, et in aeterno non pecca.
